Nordby

Nordby is wellcoming you when you arrive with the ferry from Esbjerg.

In the charming town of Nordby you experience a mixture of old and new buildings - side by side. The old houses are very well preserverd.

The islanders have taken great care and respect in protecting earlier building styles. This is evident by comparing the streets of today and historical shots taken of Nordby in years gone by; very little has changed. Do not miss the opportunity for a walk in the narrow streets of Nordby.

Traces of of the maritime past can be seen everywhere: in the names of the streets and big old houses, build by the shipowners and the captains in the second half of the 19th century. At that time Fanoe had the second largest merchant fleet in Denmark. The museum "Fanø Skibsfart og Dragtsamling" tells the story of that period.

But Nordby is also a modern town .The main street has a variety of shops, cafés, restaurants, art galleries and workshops.

The meeting between the local traditions and the many artists, who have settled on Fanoe, has created a mixed and exciting cultural enviroment. Jazz at Strien presents jazz and blues musicians, " the Fanniker days" present the cultural traditions of Fanoe , the "Godtfolk" festival presents new and traditional folk music, and the cafés and bars now and then present both wellknown and brand new artists.
