Kites are for fun - and for real.
Most children have tried to fly a kite. made either by themselves or bought in a shop.
The beach on Fanø is a marvellous place for kite flying. There is plenty of space and - most of the time - enough wind to send the kite into the sky. Kite flying is a great activity for the whole family.
But - kite flying is also for the specialists! Since the start of the 1980's kite entusiasts from all over Europe have gathered on Fanø to meet, exchange experiences and fly kites.
For more than 25 years the kite fliers have met on Fanø during the month of June. Fanø International Kite Fliers Meeting with up to 5000 participants has grown into the world's largest kite flying festival. The peak of the Festival is during a weekend in June; but during the week before and the week after the Festival the sky of Fanø Beach is covered with thousands of kites.
It is a fantastic sight to watch so many kites in the sky. All kind of kites - from traditional kites to big fantasy animals.
Many of the kites are "home made". The kite entusiasts have spent many hours during the Winter to create a new kite - and often the festival on Fanø is the first place they present their work.
A few years ago a new, smaller festival was born: The Fanø Family Kite Festival. It takes part during the first week of August. The Festival is primarily for children - and their parents. There are many acitivities for children For example kite building work shops, parachuting for teddy bears and a lot of other funny and crazy events.
Kite flying is for all - beginners as well as experts, young and old. And there is no other place like the beach on Fanø to do it!!
