The Northsea is a fantastic playground for windsurfing, kitesurfing and kayaking - almost all year round.
Whether you sail on the high seas on the west side of the island or in shallow water of the Wadden Sea on the east side, a great experience is waiting for you.
Wind- and Kitesurfing
On the beach south of Rindby Strand an area has been reserved specially for the various kinds of surfing.
The area is clearly marked and is about three kms long. This is the ONLY PLACE where any kind of surfing is ALLOWED.
Kayaking and Canoeing
Sailing kayak and canoe is allowed everywhere - except for a few places on the eastside of the island (a section where there is a general no trespassing rule).
When you sail in the waters on the eastern side of Fanø please be aware of the tide and the currents. The difference between flood and ebb can vary up to two meters. Thus the current migth be quite strong.
On the western side of the island the open sea is the attraction - be it calm or rough sea. The sea can, however, also be though so be cautiuos; especially by off-shore wind.
Seals and sailing
There are many seals in the waters surrounding Fanoe. When kayaking and canoeing it is recommended to keep a distance of at least 200 meters from the seal banks. Especially during the period from May until July when the seals have pups, It is very important for the seals to have peace.
Sailing in the Wadden Sea
The Forest and Nature Agency has published a pamphlet on sailing in the Wadden Sea. The pamphlet gives advice on how and where to sail.
You can find the pamphlet in the Turist Office.
