The Tide has a big influence on Fanoe and the Wadden Sea.
It is a fantastic experience to watch the Tide rise or fall. If you place yourself on the edge of the waterfront on the beach in Sønderho, you will experience how fast the Tide is changing.
TIDE CALENDARIt is the Tide that has created the unique nature of the Wadden Sea and the basis for the rich bird and animal life on Fanoe.
The Tide is in few words the regular rise and fall of the water level. It repeats itself in a cyclus of 12½ hour.
The time of the highest water level is called flood and the lowest water level ebb. The difference between flood and ebb is 2 m in the Wadden Sea, which is the highest in Denmark.
Approximately twice a day one billion cubic meters of water is moving back and forth through the four channels connecting the Wadden Sea and the North Sea. North of Fanoe is the Grådyb and South of Fanoe is the Knudedyb.
Around the channels and in the fairway in the harbour of Nordby the tidal current is very strong. Caution must be observed when going on the wadden.
