The Tide has a big influence on Fanoe and the Wadden Sea.It is a fantastic experience to watch the Tide rising or falling. If you you place yourself right at the waterfront on the beach in Sønderho you will experience how fast the Tide is changing.
It is the Tide that has created the unique nature of the Wadden Sea and the basis for the rich bird and animal life on Fanoe.
The Tide is in few words the regular rise and fall of the water level. It repeats itself in a cyclus of 12½ hour.
The time of the highest water level is called flood and the lowest water level ebb. The difference between flood and ebb is 2 m in the Wadden Sea, the biggest in Denmark.
Approximately twice a day one billion cubic meters of water is moving back and forth through the four channels connecting the Wadden Sea and the North Sea.adehavet med Nordsøen. North of Fanoe is the Grådyb and South of Fanoe is the Knudedyb.
Around the channels and in the fairway in the harbour of Nordby the tidal current is very strong. Caution when going on the wadden is therefore necessary.

What is the tide?
Tide is the result of the force of attraction of the moon and the sun. This influence varies according to where the moon, the sun and the earth are placed inthe sky. When the celestial bodies are in line (at new moon and full moon)the force of attraction is the strongest - and the difference between high and low water the highest. This phenomenon is called spring tide. At half moon when the force of attraction between the moon and the sun counteracts the difference between high and low water is the smallest – this is called neap tide.
Apart from the force of attraction of the moon and the sun there is another factor that has influence on the water level: the wind. A strong wind from the west might for example raise the water level considerably.
